KANNAPOLIS -- For nearly two years, the recession made David Murdock's plan to create a major research campus look like a business school case study in bad timing.Murdock, the former owner of Dole Food Co. and a crusader for the benefits of fruits and vegetables, pumped more than $600 million of his own money into the N.C. Research Campus.
